Never understood the logic of “let’s buy a truck/suv now that gas prices are down”. What, You really expect it to stay down and not fluctuate?

Yeah... I don’t get it either. One of my coworkers bought a GMC 2500 and says he needed it, I said that an F-150 could do all the towing he does and he balked, I showed him the numbers and he still balked. It’s all about perceived ability, not reality.
On the flip side my parents have a VERY luxury Ram 1500 with tons of interior room and fancy leather/wood and all, but they actually use its full towing capacity on the regular and like the interior because it’s usually used for road trips while towing.
There's a place for all of them, they're just not usually in the right place.

I have an F150 I barely drive, it’s only used for hauling stuff I can’t carry in the Bonnie.
My dad’s DD is an ‘04 F140 FX4 crew cab. He says it gets better mileage than the (now broken) ‘94 D21 extended cab he has.

I might get some hate for this, but I totally get the point of luxury trucks. If I were spending $60,000 on a new vehicle, I'd get an F-150 Platinum.
They're kind of a jack-of-all-trades, if you think about it. They're extremely nice inside, can tow, hold 5 people in supreme comfort, and the new F-150 is pretty darn quick, too. Even if you don't use the towing capacity, you can still put on tonneau cover on the bed and have a decent-sized trunk.

I’d get one, but would never dd it. My BiL on the other hand uses his f-250 almost daily for it’s capabilities.

I don’t necessarily hate the idea of a luxury truck, but I hate how it’s impossible to buy a new, bare bones, cheap work truck anymore. 6 years ago I bought a new manual RWD Ranger for $16k.

At the local Ford dealer they have a 2010 Ranger extended cab 2wd they’re asking $13k for.

Clearly the comic artist doesn’t live in Texas. I get the point, and my truck actually fits the small, humble category perfectly, but it’s a cultural thing down here.

We, good sir, are Americans (TM). We never expect anything to change, let alone get worse.

It makes as much sense as “hey, let’s go build a house right next to the ocean while the tide is out".

I’ve noticed they’re holding their value well. How many miles?

Maybe because the trucks ars changing?
My new F150 2.7L turbo is faster and more powerful than the V8s just a few years ago, in fact it’s faster than the current lineup in recent tests including the V8s and 3.5L ecoboost.
Yet I was able to get 24 mpg (rated for 26 highway) on a recent road trip that covered 500 miles of various driving scenarios.
That is a fullsize truck, that got just 3 mpg less than my VW CC did on a similar trip, but with the ability to carry 6 people (instead of 4), and tons of luggage and equipment towing two jet skis.

Fair point, that. I test drove the f150 Ecoboost (3.5 and 2.7, both 4WD) and was very impressed. Can’t say anything about the offerings from GM or Ram, though. Waiting to see how the new Taco shakes out. So if folks are looking to buy a new, more fuel efficient truck, then you’re spot on; I’m not entirely sure that’s what everyone is looking to do. I hypothesize that the attitude is closer to “gas is cheap, who cares?” rather than “the new trucks get much better mpg”.

Simple. Rich people love toys. You can’t be living paycheck to paycheck and expect to hit the lake in your boat every weekend. If you can afford a boat then whatever vehicle you have to take it is going to be swimming in luxury. It makes nothing but sense.

Calling all soda “Coke” is a cultural thing in Texas too. Doesn’t make it right.

I agree with you on that as well, my truck is a middle of the road XLT supercab with cloth bench front seat, and it had a MSRP of $40,000 (I didn’t pay that of course). People buying those premium models with $50,000 - $60,000 or higher price tags probably don’t care about gas prices. Its a image thing for many of them.
But my first truck back in 2000, I bought it because it was convenient and capable, only negative was terrible gas mileage.
Now, with these new trucks, there really isn’t a negative, I am not afraid if gas prices go up in the future with this specific truck. The future is now :)

There’s no right or wrong to owning a pickup truck. I get the lampooning: trucks are big and expensive and sometimes unnecessary. But there isn’t anything wrong with owning a big pickup. If that’s what they want, cool.
You also have to realize that most of us use a pickup as, yes, a family sedan with extra space. It’s not unusual to see one loaded with an ATV and camping supplies, a load of lumber, or a full toolbox. We use them down here, a lot.

I guess I’m a rare breed of paranoid American, where I try to think 10 steps ahead to predict how bad something will backfire.
